“What’s my name, Alomar?” She flipped out two in quick succession. Now they were even. A competitive instinct she didn’t know she had raised to the surface.

“Mimic? Ah. I understand.”

They darted for the same fish, colliding sharp claws to blunted claws. As her new nails raked across his skin, a ribbon of blood flowed.

“Oh. I am sorry.” She pulled her hand back and retracted her toys. “Captain, are you alright?”

He pulled up his hand and licked the wound. “So, it’s Alomar when we are competing, but Captain when you injure me? Nice.”

She cringed. “I am really sorry. I didn’t…I got carried away and forgot.”

“Don’t worry—my tongue heals most wounds.” He was laughing at her. “We still need two fish, will you get them or shall I?”

“I will.”

“Do you still have your claws?” He was looking down at her hands.

“Um. No. I revert when surprised or when I lose contact.”

She barely finished her sentence when his lips were pressing into hers. His rough tongue lapped at her and she parted her lips with a sigh, tangling her hands into the hair at the nape of his neck. When he drew back, it was his turn to smile. She knew she looked dopey. But her claws were back.

“Go and dry off. I am fine here.” She stiffened her spine and looked into the water, she could have had a tail at that moment, but Alomar did not need her to have one to be attractive to him. That alone was going to get her into so much trouble. He wanted her just as she was—shy Selna who had too much done to her in too short a time.

A school of fish came toward her and she relaxed, letting the rush of the water become part of her. The fish moved in slow motion to her newly tweaked senses.

She plunged her hands into the water and lifted two of the largest in the school.

With a grin and an overhand toss, she struck Alomar in the face with both. He merely laughed and drew a short knife from his boot, gutting and beheading the fish one by one. Isaro watched his smooth movements with envy. His grace was hypnotic.

“Rinse the fish and then take an armload back to the cabin.” He stood and stretched.

Isaro watched every muscle move and shift under his skin.

“I have to get some firewood or we will be eating the fish raw.”

She grabbed the fish, held them by their tails and rinsed them in the water.

The fish made a hefty armload, but she managed to get them back to the cabin with little difficulty. The table was the best surface, so she dropped them onto it and returned to wash the scent of fish off her uniform.

She returned to the cabin and started to rummage around. A thorough search produced a frying pan and she found a sealed cellar with a form of fat in it that smelled heavenly. She would never have found the cellar if she hadn’t been using her borrowed senses, but with them, the fat stood out like a beacon in the dark.
